Many Gubernatorial Candidates will also be attending! Come out and get a chance to mingle with the Candidates while networking with folks from all over Baltimore County and promoting your business! Register today! We will also have our Flea Market / Makers Market held at Town Hall on Saturday, June 11th. Come out and connect with the Arbutus community and find some treasures.

GABA’s 1st Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, June 24th. Sponsorships opportunities and participation spots are still available. See inside for more information.

On Sunday, June 26th, the July 4th Parade Committee will have a fundraiser at Shuffles Saloon, on East Drive from 1pm-5pm. Come be served by the Guest Bartenders and have a great time while raising money for the parade! Speaking of the parade, wouldn’t it be a blast to showcase your business in the Arbutus 4th of July Parade? You could decorate a car, truck, or make a float. You could also participate on foot and walk the Parade route along Oregon Ave and down East Drive. This is one of the best events in Arbutus!

June is shaping up to be a busy month! The July 4th festivities will soon follow! We hope everyone has a great start to a wonderful summer!

Arbutus July 4th 2022 Parade Committee

Dear Friends,

The Arbutus Fourth of July Committee is once again planning for a great celebration.  Last year, a lot of people turned out for a Great Parade and we received a lot of positive feedback.  We are always looking to make it a smooth and positive experience for our community so feel free to contact us with your suggestions or if you would like to volunteer.

The parade takes several months and many volunteers to coordinate but it also depends  on the kind contributions from our community members.  In addition to permits, insurance and other expenses, having a parade is expensive!  It’s not widely known that many of our parade groups actually charge a fee for their participation.  In order to have a robust parade for all to enjoy, we do hand select the finest groups available.  Our community and businesses have always contributed generously and we once again seek your support!

The committee is humbly seeking your financial support by contributing whatever amount that your financial position permits.  Private donations are the cornerstone of our success.  Your donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated!  Please consider donating and help to preserve our 4th of July Tradition!

Your tax deductible donation made be made out and sent to:

Need a passport? Computer not working and you need to get online? How about some peace and quiet? Maybe a little research into local history. One of the best resources for this, and many other activities, is the Arbutus Library. The Library is open Monday through Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. and closes most days at 8:00 p.m. (Friday and Saturday at 5:00 p.m.)

Avoid summer “learning loss” by engaging in reading and other activities. From early childhood to adults there are a variety of book and game clubs available.

The Arbutus Recreation and Parks Council offers team sports, exercise and fitness programs for all ages and tutoring for children. Schedules vary and courses take place throughout the year. Visit the web link for information.

For those aged 60 and up, the Arbutus Senior Center is a great place for active engagement. From travel to fitness, advice on navigating healthcare and finances and designed with the needs of seniors in mind, the Arbutus Senior Center is a welcoming community.

All three of these assets are situated on a campus at 855 Sulphur Spring Road. There is ample parking and walkways connect with the adjacent community.

Master Plan 2030 Hub

While we await the release of Master Plan 2030 this summer, it might be a good time to revisit one of the leading goals in its development:  sustainability. At its most basic, the word sustainable is defined as the ability to be maintained at a certain level or rate; and the ability to be  defended and upheld. When we talk about sustainability in the context of communities, organizations or government we are doing so with a broader concept – “Sustainability means meeting our own needs without  compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources.  Sustainability is not just environmental- ism. (University of Alberta)”

The Master Plan’s series of public input sessions dealt with many aspects of individual, community and governmental needs and goals. As a Maryland designated Sustainable Community, Arbutus can look forward to continued opportunities as well as challenges.

Opportunities exist in the community’s relationship with a growing, nationally recognized university, UMBC, and the associated public outreach and economic development activities associated with it. Healthcare  providers Saint Agnes Hospital and Kaiser Permanente are close neighbors, employing many residents and serving the needs of the community. Joined with small and mid-sized businesses, many owned and operated by GABA members, they form the backbone of the economy in the Arbutus area. Designated opportunity zones in the Halethorpe Farms/Hollins Ferry Roads area and along Benson Avenue have brought major investments by logistics companies, a commercial bakery, manufacturers and large scale service providers.

The Baltimore County Arts Guild maintains space in the Maiden Choice area while Guinness has established a public presence at the Howard County border, reinventing the former Seagrams Distillery. The location along the Patapsco River is spurring discussions about ways to connect through greenway and water trails.

A diverse mix of large and small businesses, educational resources and healthcare providers helps to create economic growth and stability. Economic benefits also derive from tourism associated with natural areas (Patapsco River and State Park), entertainment venues (UMBC’s Events Center and Performing Arts and Humanities Building; the Hollywood Theatre) and other unique attractions. All are factors in creating sustainability.

Wilkens Police Beat

Special Alert – At a recent meeting of the Halethorpe Improvement Association Officer Tom Warehime advised the members about break-ins that have taken place in recent months throughout the 1st precinct area.  Some have included “cat burglar” type thefts taking place in the overnight hours, sometimes while residents are in their homes.

As we are now in the warmer months, remember to lock your doors and windows at night.  Don’t leave the house with windows open and unlocked.  Report suspicious activity and keep an eye on your neighbors’ homes if you know they are on vacation or otherwise away from their home for an extended period.

Remember to lock sheds and garages after finishing outdoor projects.  Do not keep valuables in your vehicles.  Minimize opportunities for thefts.

Bicycle Theft Prevention

Here are some prevention techniques, which if followed, can make it more difficult for a thief to steal your bicycle:

  • Always lock it.  Never leave your bike unlocked, even if unattended for just a few minutes.  A thief can steal your bike in seconds.  Always lock your bike through the frame and at least one wheel.  Use a cable, cable lock, or second U-lock to lock the other wheel.  If you have a quick release front wheel, remove it and take it with you.
  • Invest in the best lock you can afford, usually hardened steel U-lock or hardened steel chain and padlock.
  • Lock your bike to a permanent object.  Make sure a thief can’t slide your bike over the top of the object.
  • Don’t lock your bike to another bike, small tree, aluminum or wooden posts, or to a chain link fence.  These items can easily be broken or cut.  If you keep your bike in a garage, basement, or on a porch, lock it.
  • If you store your bike in a shed or garage, lock it to some other large item as a riding lawnmower, snow blower, power washer, etc.
  • If you must lock your bike outside, always lock your bike in a visible, well-lighted area.  Lock it up in an area where it can easily be seen by as many people as possible.  Try to maximize the use and take advantage of “natural surveillance.”  Thieves usually don’t like an audience.
  • Write down the bicycle’s serial number and keep it in a safe place.  Look for the serial number stamped on your bike’s head tube, seat post, under the crank, or on the frame’s rear wheel mount.
  • Engrave your bike with your driver’s license (soundex) number.  This will allow law enforcement to find the owner of a recovered stolen/found bike.
